Faire passer sur scène la prose de Zola relevait assurément de la gageure. Défi relevé et réussi par David Csezienski, qui installa les élèves de l’ESTBA dans le bar L’Assommoir, où la classe ouvrière vient boire sa paye, et leur fit tenir tour à tour les rôles de narrateurs ou d’interprètes exposant la vie de Gervaise Macquart, courageuse ouvrière qui vient à Paris avec son amant et leurs deux enfants. Le père des enfants l’abandonne, mais elle n’est pas loin de se sortir de sa condition en ouvrant une blanchisserie. Coups du sort et déterminisme contrarieront cependant sa trajectoire pour l’envoyer dans le cercueil. C’était il y a deux saisons et la première promotion de l’école du TnBA a saisi cette riche matière à jouer avec talent et jubilation. Preuve que le pari fut gagné, le TnBA a demandé à L’Assommoir de réinvestir le studio de création cette année, avec ses situations de jeu produites conjointement par la théâtralité naturelle de la prose de Zola et par le travail d’improvisation des jeunes acteurs. Une atmosphère dionysiaque s’empare joyeusement de la brutalité du texte de Zola et place au cœur de son récit les thématiques de l’alcool, de l’amour et de la mort, mais surtout de l’importance de la solidarité en cette période de capitalisme florissant.
