Créée en 1979 au Théâtre de l’Odéon (dans une mise en scène collective de l’auteur, de Maurice Bénichou et de Jacques Rosner), L’Atelier est l’œuvre la plus populaire de Jean-Claude Grumberg (qui obtint, à l’occasion de la mise en scène signée par Gildas Bourdet en 1998, le Molière de l’auteur en 1999). Une pièce à travers laquelle le dramaturge s’inspire librement de certains aspects de son histoire personnelle, présentant le quotidien d’un atelier de confection parisien, au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Des couturières cousent, piquent, taillent, rient, pleurent, râlent… Elles tentent d’oublier les années noires, de retrouver la joie de vivre afin de pouvoir, de nouveau, faire confiance à l’avenir. De fil en aiguille, les liens se tissent, les amitiés et les antipathies aussi. « L’Atelier est une pièce qui fait ressortir les réalités de l’existence sans chercher à l’enjoliver ou à l’amoindrir, déclare Pascal Joumier. Chacun d’entre nous devrait se reconnaître dans les personnages de cette pièce qui, bien que trentenaire, reste toujours d’actualité ». Une pièce pour laquelle le metteur en scène a choisi « un décor simple, au réalisme nostalgique » afin de créer une représentation qui « mette en valeur le texte ainsi que le travail profond et intérieur de l’acteur ».
