Un éminent chirurgien, arabe israélien, opère les survivants d’un attentat commis dans un restaurant de Tel-Aviv, bondé d’enfants. Informé par un ami policier, il découvre incrédule et horrifié que la kamikaze est sa femme. Faisant face à l’inacceptable, il entreprend alors d’enquêter dans les territoires palestiniens sur les raisons de ce geste incompréhensible, et se lance dans une impérieuse et périlleuse quête de vérité qui croise des enjeux politiques, psychologiques et existentiels, et l’emporte vers des zones de conscience inconnues. Déjà adapté à plusieurs reprises – pour le grand écran ou la scène -, ce roman de l’auteur algérien Yasmina Khadra vise à éclairer un réel insaisissable. Comment une vie à deux faite d’amour et de complicité cède-t-elle la place au fanatisme terroriste ? A travers l’éprouvante recherche du médecin anéanti par le chagrin, c’est l’âme humaine et ses méandres que cherche à analyser le metteur en scène Frank Berthier. « Ce récit me donne la possibilité de scruter la naissance une seconde fois d’un homme, pour qui les valeurs d’antan ne sont plus. Il s’agit d’une fracture, et d’un éveil. »
