« J’ai travaillé sur La Cagnotte une première fois, en 1995, avec les étudiants de l’atelier de mise en scène et des techniques du théâtre de l’Université de La Rochelle. Je venais de Paris et j’arrivais en Province, le voyage inverse qu’accomplissent les notables de La-Ferté-sous-Jouarre dans la pièce d’Eugène Labiche. A cette époque déjà, j’avais pu apprécier à quel point la puissance de l’écriture de cet auteur remportait tous les suffrages chez les jeunes apprentis comédiens et comment il nous donnait la possibilité d’être au cœur du travail de l’acteur. Alors, c’est avec beaucoup d’appétit que j’ai souhaité remettre sur le métier cette pièce avec des interprètes chevronnés. La jubilation a été à la mesure de la difficulté, car le rythme imposé par Labiche suppose de suivre la partition écrite avec précision pour être au plus près de la veine satirique. La Cagnotte met en scène le ridicule et l’absurde d’une petite bourgeoisie ambitieuse et corrompue : des trop-pleins de certitudes, des barons poussiéreux de nos provinces (qui n’enlèvent pas les housses des fauteuils de leur salon).
Des personnages à la fois attachants et terrifiants
Des personnages de la vie sociale et politique de La-Ferté-sous-Jouarre qui sont « français » tout simplement. Des français d’aujourd’hui, attachants et terrifiants à la fois dans leur ignorance inconsciente, dans leur avidité de pouvoir. Tels des ballons de baudruche surgonflés de privilèges éphémères, d’argent économisé sou à sou, ces puissants autoproclamés, ces figures de tricheurs vont perdre pour gagner en vérité. Les faux-semblants se révèlent et la vérité toute crue apparaît, dénuée de poudre et de masques… Fin de partie cruelle et drôle pour ce petit monde qui rentre chez lui malgré tout inchangé. Il ne s’agit pas pour Labiche de critiquer la société, ni de la changer, mais bien de la montrer à ceux qui la composent et de les inviter à en rire franchement avec lui. Et pour nous, aujourd’hui, les personnages de La Cagnotte nous impliquent dans notre bêtise et notre petitesse. Alors, peut-être s’agit-il tout simplement d’essayer de ne pas trop leur ressembler… »
