Pourquoi le choix d’une fiction de Lydie Salvayre pour inspiration ?
Laurence Février : J’ai lu l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Lydie Salvayre dont son dernier roman, Portrait de l’écrivain en animal domestique. Ce qui me plaît dans cette écriture, c’est l’humour corrosif dont elle use pour parler de la violence du monde. Un humour qui me touche car c’est aussi une forme d’élégance.Elle parle d’hommes et de femmes qui vont bien apparemment mais qui sont complètement déglingués. Elle ne s’abandonne ni à la complaisance ni à l’apitoiement. Admiratrice de Pascal et de Racine, elle travaille à rendre à la langue son âpreté, qu’elle soit précieuse ou populaire.
Quel est l’enjeu des Belles Âmes ?
L. F. : J’aime dans le romanla façon dont Lydie Salvayre s’en prend au voyeurisme actuel. L’aventure contemporaine ne consiste plus à aller faire la chasse en Afrique lors de safaris. Aujourd’hui, il est de bon ton d’aller voir au plus près les plus déshérités et les plus pauvres d’Europe. L’écrivain traite ce sujet du malheur des uns qui fait spectacle pour les autres avec une maestria et une violence humoristiques inouïes. À l’heure confortable du repas du soir, il est habituel de voir à la TV les pires horreurs. L’agence Real Voyages fonctionne comme une métaphore de notre monde à partir du moment où elle décide que les plus nantis auront pour découverte exceptionnelle et exotique l’existence des plus démunis.

Quel est ce périple touristique ?
L. F. : Le voyage parcourt l’Europe, en passant par la banlieue parisienne puis par les quartiers d’émigrés turcs en Allemagne et par un squat de drogués à Milan. Le road-movie du bus avec ses passagers s’achève dans un hôpital psychiatrique, et c’est le comble de l’horreur. Les touristes en ont assez et rebroussent chemin. Le potentiel humanitaire est épuisé chez ces militants de hasard, des bonnes âmes à la recherche d’une conscience.
Comment la fiction romanesque devient-elle une fable au théâtre ?
L. F. : La fable devient réalité sous la plume de Lydie Salvayre, qui force le trait. Je suis seule sur le plateau. A mes côtés, la présence de Ahmed Karetti, danseur et artiste de cirque. L’acrobate manipule dans le mouvement un monde imaginaire de pantins, de sculptures de terre cuite confectionnées par les patients artistes de l’atelier Marie-Laurencin de l’hôpital de Montfavet, près d’Avignon. La musique de Vic Moan offre l’ambiance vagabonde souhaitée du road-movie. J’incarne la narratrice, l’écrivain qui parle à la première personne, la récitante de tragédie grecque qui témoigne des passions humaines à travers ces portraits saisis au vitriol.
