Pour quelles raisons avez-vous voulu porter à la scène La Princesse de Clèves ? Et comment avez-vous envisagé ce texte en tant que metteure en scène et comédienne ?
Laurence Février : Je suis « tombée » dans La Princesse de Clèves quand j’étais gamine et que je l’étudiais à l’école. J’ai continué à porter ce roman, en secret, comme un de ceux qu’on emporterait sur une île déserte… Ma prédilection pour ce texte, je n’en parlais donc pas, mais à cause, ou grâce à des événements récents, je me suis dit qu’il fallait passer du secret à la révélation. Je me suis dit qu’il y allait de ma responsabilité d’artiste, de proposer au public d’entendre ce chef-d’œuvre, que les gens l’aient lu ou pas. C’est l’angle premier de mon projet : dire et redire cette langue magnifique, notre patrimoine littéraire, et éviter par tous les moyens qu’on ne mette ce chef-d’œuvre aux oubliettes. Mettre en scène ce texte, c’est aussi dire au grand jour une passion secrète. Ce qui m’a ravie, c’est de voir que cette passion est partagée par beaucoup… Quand il y a eu les mouvements de protestation à la Sorbonne, j’ai vu que les grévistes portaient des roses jaunes – du jaune, pour des grévistes…- parce que c’est la couleur secrète de la Princesse de Clèves, elle dit aimer passionnément cette couleur mais ne pas pouvoir la porter, parce qu’elle est blonde, et que le jaune ne va pas aux blondes… Qu’un peuple, à cause d’une réflexion de son président de la République, se mette à porter des roses jaunes, en l’honneur d’une héroïne littéraire du XVII° siècle, je trouve ça magnifique. C’est un acte artistique, de contestation poétique.
Comment se passe le combat entre le cœur et la raison dans cette œuvre ? Quelle est la nature de l’amour qui saisit les protagonistes, et singulièrement la Princesse ?
L. F. : Quand Madame de Lafayette écrit, c’est toujours pour parler d’une femme à qui elle donne le premier rôle, mais c’est elle-même qui apparaît en creux et de façon magistrale. Ses héros sont très jeunes, ils se débattent au premier plan dans les affres de leur passion, mais elle leur donne une maturité d’analyse qui est bien au-dessus de leur âge, et c’est sa conception du monde à elle, qui apparaît. C’est elle qui nous donne accès à un ailleurs, par une construction romanesque vertigineuse, elle nous fait respirer un autre éther, respirer l’air d’un autre paysage. Ce qu’elle nous montre, c’est une femme capable de choisir l’absolu, quitte à le payer d’un prix exorbitant. Pour moi, remettre en lumière cette œuvre, qui est traversée par la grandeur et le dépassement de soi, c’est comme un retour du sublime. Bien sûr, les valeurs de notre société de confort immédiat nous rendent captifs de « petits plaisirs », mais nous avons aussi besoin de sentiments extrêmes…

Pourquoi avoir intitulé le spectacle La passion corsetée ?
L. F. : Ce titre s’est imposé au cours des répétitions, à cause de la tenue qu’exige le texte pour être « dit » à haute voix, il impose un souffle athlétique, c’est une langue profondément articulée, comme le vers racinien. C’est la langue de l’éloquence et il est exclu de la dire mollement, il faut être « corseté ». C’est aussi l’expression de ce que vivent les trois personnages principaux, pour qui il n’y a “pas de quartier” une fois qu’ils ont embarqué sur le vaisseau de la passion. Une passion, vécue jusqu’au sublime, qui devient irrécupérable par quiconque et profondément subversive.
