Sur quel principe repose concrètement cet album’
Laurent de Wilde : Le principe de cet album est le suivant : je produis des sons avec mon piano (sur le clavier, mais également dans et sur l’instrument, à l’aide de différents objets percussifs ou sonores), qui sont enregistrés en direct par Otisto dans son ordinateur. Pendant que je les joue, il les boucle, les traite, les maltraite, me les renvoie considérablement altérés, je réagis par une autre figure sonore, rythmique, mélodique ou harmonique, qu’il enregistre à son tour et ainsi de suite. Rapidement, nous avons à notre disposition une huitaine de pistes à l’aide desquelles nous construisons en temps réel une forme musicale qui alterne, se répète, s’élargit… Il s’agit sans aucun doute d’un duo piano-ordinateur. L’ordinateur est souvent utilisé en musique électronique comme boîte à sons préparés, et je pense qu’on devient de plus en plus blasé par rapport à cette utilisation, un peu rigide et formelle. L’intérêt de ce projet tient à ce que ce sont les capacités réactives et transformationnelles de l’ordinateur qui sont exploitées, ce qui en fait un véritable instrument de musique en temps réel.

Quel est le rôle d’Otisto 23? Parlez-nous de ce partenaire musical…
Laurent de Wilde : Otisto est donc le deuxième membre de ce duo. Sans lui, le projet serait impossible. Ce qui est intéressant, c’est qu’avant d’être ingénieur du son et "ordiniste" il a fait des études de piano, donc il a une intime compréhension de mon univers. Moi-même ayant pas mal tripoté des machines ces dernières années, j’ai une assez bonne idée du contenu de son travail. Ce qui fait que nous pouvons être à l’écoute l’un de l’autre en bonne intelligence, ce qui est essentiel pour un projet comme celui-ci. En effet, comme nous travaillons beaucoup sur les répétitions de figures et leurs évolutions, il faut pouvoir aller tout de suite dans la bonne direction sans perdre une seconde, sinon l’exercice devient ennuyeux à écouter. Ce que j’aime surtout chez lui, c’est son incroyable faculté d’adaptation, la vitesse de sa réactivité avec un instrument d’une incroyable complexité dont il maîtrise parfaitement les données techniques. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de gens comme lui sur cette planète…

Laurent de Wilde : Ça me fait penser à une phrase de Woody Allen qui disait qu’il avait toujours un livre sur lui au cas où il prendrait un ascenseur pour plus de trois étages… Oui, j’ai affreusement peur de m’ennuyer, et je pense que je fais ce métier pour y échapper. On peut dire aussi que je m’ennuie vite : la routine m’épouvante, et dès que quelque chose dans ma vie semble être sur des rails, je ne peux m’empêcher de voir comment je pourrais faire pour en modifier le trajet. J’envie souvent les artistes monochromes qui labourent le même sillon pendant toute leur vie. Je sais que j’en suis incapable, mais à mon âge, on apprend à vivre avec !
