Les différents spectacles programmés à Chevilly-Larue portent certaines de vos œuvres en dehors de leur forme artistique initiale. Qu’est-ce que vous inspire ce genre d’adaptations ?
Laurent Gaudé : Pour être totalement honnête, lorsque que quelqu’un vient me voir avec un projet nécessitant un déplacement de forme, ma première réaction est double. Je me dis pourquoi pas, mais me demande également pourquoi, au fond, aller chercher un récit ou un roman pour l’adapter à la scène alors qu’il existe des pièces écrites pour cela. Mais je dépasse très vite ce trouble, car je pense que ce qui est écrit et édité, d’une certaine façon, ne m’appartient plus tout à fait. Les œuvres sont essentiellement faites pour que les autres s’en emparent.
Quel rapport entretenez-vous avec la dimension orale de l’écriture ?
L. G. : Je crois que la destination finale idéale de tout ce que j’écris est la lecture à voix haute. Car il me semble que mon écriture entretient un rapport étroit avec l’oralité, que la nature de l’adresse de mes textes se prête particulièrement bien à la lecture publique. Pour autant, je ne nie pas la différence entre l’écriture pour le théâtre et l’écriture pour le roman.

A quel endroit se situe, pour vous, cette différence ?
L. G. : Elle se situe justement dans l’adresse. Le roman, par exemple, est destiné à une lecture calme, intime. Lorsque j’écris un roman, j’ai un peu l’impression que je chuchote à l’oreille de mon lecteur, que se noue une relation d’individu à individu entre lui et moi. Pour le théâtre, c’est exactement le contraire. Les mots doivent résonner, remplir un espace à travers une adresse directe, une forme de profération. A l’inverse du roman, le texte de théâtre est fait pour être entendu de façon ouverte. Mais là où cela se complique, c’est lorsque l’on compare des pièces monologuées, comme Onysos le furieux par exemple, et des nouvelles écrites à la première personne du singulier… Sans doute existe-t-il un procédé d’ordre inconscient qui oriente la façon d’écrire, la syntaxe que l’on emploie, lorsque l’on sait que l’on travaille pour la scène.
Fondamentalement, quelle impulsion est-elle à l’origine de votre écriture ?
L. G. : Cette question renvoie à la face cachée de chaque écrivain. L’écriture est l’exploration permanente d’un mélange de fantasmes, de terreurs personnelles, de rêves… Le choix d’un sujet ne constitue finalement que la surface d’un texte. Le point de départ est beaucoup plus opaque et pulsionnel que cela. Il se situe du côté de la jouissance, du plaisir d’écrire, mais aussi du désir paradoxal de ne pas se laisser en paix, de contrarier sa tranquillité.
