A quoi fait référence la pièce de Stephens ?
Laurent Gutmann : Pornographie se penche sur la première semaine londonienne du mois de juillet 2005, une semaine sous les projecteurs politiques et médiatiques. Le 2 juillet, un concert caritatif – Live Eight London – était organisé à Hyde Park, un rendez-vous populaire avec la pop music, U2, Pink Floyd … Le 6 juillet, Londres était choisie comme ville organisatrice des Jeux Olympiques de 2012. Le 7 juillet, quatre attentats dans le métro et le bus londoniens ont fait 56 morts. Ces événements marquent un moment décisif de l’Histoire de Londres, un horizon qui a déclenché l’écriture de la pièce.

L’identité des terroristes, nés en Angleterre, a surpris et effaré l’opinion…
L. G. : Les terroristes étaient de bons fils, ils avaient fait de bonnes études. Comment la pulsion suicidaire et meurtrière a-t-elle pu toucher ces citoyens, des anglais comme les autres ? La question effectivement effraie. Simon Stephens dépasse le sujet du terrorisme et expose diverses transgressions dans son oeuvre. La pièce est composée de 7 tableaux, 7 histoires de transgression secrète : espionnage industriel, agression physique, voyeurisme, inceste, préparation d’un attentat dans le métro. Un père de famille quitte un matin sa femme et ses enfants, les embrasse et va faire sauter une bombe. L’oeuvre laisse place à un silence envahissant et morbide. Stephens est un auteur à peine quarantenaire, inscrit dans son époque ; il ne juge pas de l’extérieur ni n’adopte de position de surplomb. Père de trois enfants, il aime sa ville. Pornographie fait le constat de la solitude, de la fragmentation et de l’atomisation de l’homme dans la société.
Comment expliquez-vous ce titre énigmatique ?
L. G. : la représentation sexuelle est pornographique dès que l’homme devient objet ou marchandise. De même, la société fait évoluer les hommes de sorte qu’ils perdent contact avec la réalité, avec les autres qui sont réifiés, chosifiés. La société contemporaine entretient le fantasme de la transparence absolue : chacun se tient sous le regard de l’autre, devenu voyeur. Or, la vie est faite d’opacité, et pour échapper à cette surexposition de tous les regards, l’individu use de la transgression et sauve, en quelque sorte, l’intime. Ce théâtre a vocation de s’adresser au plus grand nombre. Pornographie parle de la violence de notre temps, la nôtre, à travers une perte de contact implicite avec la réalité inscrite dans une mégalopole occidentale.
