Votre dernière création se propose de « faire chorégraphie d’une interprétation en travail ». Qu’est-ce qu’interpréter en danse ?
C’est la question que pose ce duo ! Il fait le portrait d’une relation entre une interprète et un chorégraphe : nous questionnons l’interprétation en tant qu’objet de regard, et nous essayons de montrer les choix par lesquels se construit une interprétation, plutôt que le résultat fini. Je regarde la danseuse, Catherine Legrand ; elle se sert de mon regard, de ma présence, pour inventer son interprétation. Il y a par exemple une séquence sur la consigne « s’habiller avec le corps du chorégraphe », dans laquelle je suis, littéralement, à sa disposition pour devenir un vêtement : au fond, à quoi sert un chorégraphe ?

Faut-il considérer que l’interprète instrumentalise le chorégraphe ? Ou le contraire ?
Nous jouons sur une relation trouble, qui n’est jamais univoque. Il y a un passage où j’agis autour de Catherine ; d’une certaine façon, je la chosifie. Mais, par la seule qualité de sa présence, elle agit sur ce qui se passe. C’est ce mystère que j’essaie de mettre en lumière. Qui propose quoi ? Qu’est-ce qui se joue dans une telle relation ? La manipulation consentie du peintre et du modèle est souvent étudiée ; on questionne moins les rapports chorégraphe-interprète, qui pourtant sont souvent fusionnels et très riches. Nous citons dans la pièce un solo écrit par Dominique Bagouet pour Catherine à la fin des années 1980 : ce solo est devenu la « carte d’identité » de Catherine, on ne sait plus si le sujet en est l’interprète, le chorégraphe…
Votre travail s’expose généralement in situ.
Pour àtitré, deux sujet à interprétation, nous construisons un espace instable dans un site que nous cherchons au contraire à « stabiliser », aménager et éclairer. Il apparaît comme un lieu de représentation, frontal, avec des sièges, et simultanément il a quelque chose d’un espace d’exposition, voire d’un chantier, avec des lampes de fortune. La pièce se joue dans un angle, le public la voit de trois-quarts. J’essaie d’instaurer un principe d’incertitude : est-ce que l’on assiste à une fiction, à une sorte de documentaire ? Cette ambiguïté du code de représentation doit soutenir le regard, en troublant les repères.
