Tout se passe « à l’heure qui est celle des rapports sauvages entre les hommes et les animaux », apprend-on au début de Dans la solitude des champs de coton. Laurent Rochut précise, lui, que sa version de la pièce de Bernard-Marie Koltès prend place « dans les dernières lignes d’une grande ville africaine, à l’orée d’un conflit ». Ici, le rôle du Dealer renvoie à une jeune femme noire portant treillis et veste d’homme. Elle dispose « de tout ce qui se vend d’illicite, en substance et en nature ». Quant au personnage du Client, le metteur en scène explique qu’il s’agit d’un homme blanc, étranger au lieu et peut-être à lui-même, suspicieux et plein de désirs inavoués, voire inavouables. Le face-à-face peut commencer. Il explorera les rapports de sujétion et d’interdépendance, portera un regard « sur le pillage et les commerces licites ou illicites entre l’Afrique et les pays industrialisés ».
