En homme de scène et de théâtre accompli, Laurent Viel s’empare des chansons de Jacques Brel, matériau littéraire, musical et émotionnel « comme un autre ». Et y cherche avec rigueur et passion sa voie à lui. Il la trouve là où tant d’autres s’égareraient à chercher à se mesurer au modèle sur son terrain, comme il n’y a pas si longtemps le consternant Florent Pagny. Laurent Viel prend d’emblée au contraire le parti de s’éloigner résolument de l’approche démesurée du grand Jacques. Le Brel de Viel est mis à distance, éclairé en contre jour, dans un noir et blanc acéré. Un Brel sublimé et finalement, par la grâce du spectacle, réactivé, modifié, recyclé. Un Brel à contre-pied mais vivant ! En comédien-chanteur, c’est-à-dire comédien et chanteur – et non pas comme souvent demi-chanteur et demi-comédien -, Laurent Viel livre de ces chansons que l’on croyait connaître une relecture dépouillée et radicale, projetant sur elles des lumières tour à tour crues, drôles ou émouvantes, toujours nouvelles. Tout est précis mais intense, inventif mais respectueux. Laurent Viel se glisse dans ces chansons comme dans un costume de théâtre puis il entre en scène et chante. On regarde, on est saisi. Et l’on oublie Brel. Tout bonnement. Une performance exceptionnelle.
