Pour la comédienne et metteuse en scène Catherine Hiegel, Harpagon est le personnage heureux d’une farce horrible qui réduit sa maisonnée, ses enfants et ses domestiques, à l’inconfort d’une misère puisque nul ne peut profiter de quoi que ce soit, fût-ce du moindre sou. Le barbon n’hésite pas à marier sa fille du moment qu’il n’a pas de dot à assurer. Voilà ses enfants devenus faux et menteurs, acculés à la mendicité et au vol pour accéder à la liberté et au simple plaisir des jours. L’avare ne profite pas de son argent ; il ne consent pas à sa dépense qui serait pure perte concrète. Le voilà ligoté. L’Avare est le drame d’une famille disloquée par la folie d’un représentant légal égoïste, une tragédie de l’isolement, de la vieillesse et du pouvoir abusif des pères. La Hiegel sait prendre le parti des femmes et des jeunes dans un univers patriarcal et machiste qui prétend que le pouvoir se conjugue avec l’immortalité. Harpagon vit une passion excessive avec sa fortune accumulée, il l’aime, veut la voir et la toucher, comme si la célèbre cassette respirait un souffle féminin enchanteur. Tout pourrait virer au tragique ; or, la comédie souriante l’emporte, se moquant de la pingrerie d’un homme qui n’en finit pas de s’automutiler. Denis Podalydès sera celui qui vit pour le seul appât du gain.
