La scène musicale actuelle déborde de talents dans le registre vocal des contre-ténors. Un monde vocal longtemps marginalisé mais concentrant désormais toutes les attentions, y compris celles des grands médias qui se sont par exemple pris de passion pour notre Philippe Jaroussky national. Ceux que la starisation et le raffinement « féminisant » du chanteur français agacent devraient être comblés par ces retrouvailles avec Zazzo. Le mordant des attaques, l’intensité du timbre, l’anglais parfait, la « gueule » et le regard bleuté incisif de l’américain apportent en effet un supplément d’âme dans le paysage. Son programme Haendel conçu avec la complicité des Folies françoises de Patrick Cohën-Akénine est un pur régal confrontant des extraits des premières et ultimes œuvres pour alto masculin (opéras et oratorios) du compositeur. Pour la petite histoire, Zazzo, qui vient de triompher dans Giulio Cesare à l’Opéra de Paris, changera d’univers fin mars à Londres au Wigmore Hall en chantant un programme de mélodies américaines d’Ives, Barber et Ned Rorem.
