Peu avant de mourir du Sida, en 1995, Jean-Luc Lagarce a écrit trois textes autobiographiques, réunis en un seul volume et publiés à titre posthume par les Solitaires intempestifs en 2001. Si L’Apprentissage raconte son retour à la vie après une plongée dans le coma, Le Bain restitue ses derniers instants d’intimité avec son amant Gary tandis que Le Voyage à La Haye retrace la dernière tournée de l’auteur avec les comédiens du Théâtre de la Roulotte. Lorsque Patrick Coulais découvre ces deux derniers textes, il est bouleversé : « Pour un acteur, il y a des textes qui prennent valeur d’engagement, il n’est plus question de rôle mais d’une sorte d’adéquation à une écriture, à un sujet, à une sensibilité. Comme une évidence, à travers le filtre ténu de l’interprétation, émerge le projet de vouloir transmettre cette langue si particulière, sans identification, mais au plus près de cet aveu. » Il en résulte ce spectacle dépouillé où l’acteur, seul avec une simple chaise, restitue la langue et la parole testamentaire de Jean-Luc Lagarce.
