Comme dans son précédent opus, Open Space, sur les employés d’une compagnie d’assurance, Mathilda May imagine dans Le Banquet un spectacle visuel, musical et sans paroles, où elle passe au crible un repas de noces. La metteuse en scène et autrice convie sur scène dix mimes, danseurs, chanteurs et acteurs pour donner vie à ce banquet de mariage, « moment charnière » vécu comme « enfermement ou ouverture, sacrifice ou promesse », ainsi qu’elle le décrit. Créé au Rond-Point en 2018 et récompensé de deux Molières, le spectacle est ici repris au Théâtre de Paris, où les sons, la musique country de Dolly Parton, les onomatopées ou les borborygmes rivalisent de drôlerie avec le mime, les grimaces et le langage des corps. Un théâtre original qui n’est pas sans évoquer le cinéma muet au temps du noir et blanc.
