Emilio Sagi, qui signe la mise en scène, a été le maître d’œuvre du spectacle d’ouverture de l’ère Choplin (Le Chanteur de Mexico). Depuis, avec Les Fées de Wagner, la zarzuela La Generala de Vives et récemment une superbe production de The Sound of Music de Rodgers et Hammerstein, Emilio Sagi a pu faire partager au public parisien sa façon poétique, sensible et coloriste de faire vivre l’art lyrique en ses multiples facettes. Jean-Christophe Spinosi était également à l’affiche de la première saison de Jean-Luc Choplin, et dirigeait déjà Rossini (une rareté : La Pietra del Paragone, mise en scène par Giorgio Barberio Corsetti et Pierrick Sorin). La fougue du chef, à la tête de son ensemble Matheus, devrait s’acclimater à merveille aux couleurs généreusement déployées par le metteur en scène dans ce Barbier de Séville déjà présenté au Teatro Real de Madrid en 2005 (et qui a fait l’objet, depuis, d’une sortie en DVD chez Decca). Emilio Sagi prévient : « Ce n’est pas une œuvre qui suit une logique dramaturgique et ma mise en scène ne sera donc pas logique » Avant d’ajouter : « La partition regorge d’ingrédients : le tout doit pouvoir faire un bon cocktail. Les chanteurs vont vraiment s’amuser ». En l’occurrence, le Théâtre du Châtelet a réuni un plateau de jeunes chanteurs, dont le ténor Bogdan Mihai, acclamé lors de sa récente prise de rôle du Comte Almaviva, le baryton Jeremy Carpenter (Figaro) et la mezzo Anna Stéphany (Rosine).
