« C’est l’histoire d’amour parfaite. », dit Florence Camoin à propos de la romance entre Denise, la jeune Valognaise montée à Paris, et Octave Mouret, le directeur ambitieux et inventif du premier grand temple du consumérisme moderne. Mais derrière la petite histoire, se cache la grande : c’est également cet aspect auquel l’adaptatrice et metteur en scène a voulu s’attacher, pour montrer combien « cette apparition du commerce moderne avait changé la vie des femmes ». « Je sens qu’il faut y revenir dans notre époque troublée », ajoute-t-elle. Offrant un emploi et l’occasion d’une promotion sociale aux plus humbles, et la possibilité pour les plus fortunées d’accéder à l’indépendance papillonnante du caprice dépensier, les grands magasins sont un des leviers de l’émancipation féminine. « Il fallait de l’ampleur pour rendre compte au théâtre de ce roman de Zola sur la naissance du commerce moderne, l’apparition des droits sociaux et l’émancipation des femmes » : Florence Camoin choisit une troupe nombreuse et un décor où la vidéo recrée la fièvre acheteuse pour relever ce défi.
