Si tout le monde connaît Monsieur Jourdain, sa Belle marquise dont les yeux d’amour mourir le font et le Grand Mamamouchi, les situations comiques écrites avec virtuosité par Molière ont peut-être tendance, dans certaines mises en scène, à faire oublier la critique de mœurs. Fort de ce constat, Guillaume Gatteau ne perd pas de vue que Monsieur Jourdain est un bourgeois qui ne se satisfait plus de ce qu’il est. Il souligne également le couple qu’il forme avec sa femme : « loin d’une espèce de Bonemine rigolote et râleuse qui s’exclame à chaque phrase ou extravagance de son mari, nous assistons, j’oserais dire tout simplement, aux ultimes dialogues d’un couple qui ne s’aime plus, et où chacun défend ses droits. » Les maîtres et nobles sont eux aussi décortiqués à la loupe, eux qui font tout pour que Monsieur Jourdain ne devienne pas un danger pour eux, socialement. Pour appuyer cette lecture, le metteur en scène mise sur un dispositif d’abord déambulatoire puis quadri-frontal : l’un, ouvert, exprime l’envie d’ailleurs du bourgeois, l’autre, fermé, montre l’étroitesse d’esprit des personnages qui gravitent autour de lui.
