Première pièce de Giono (1931), Le Bout de la route confronte une famille tétanisée par la perte d’êtres chers à un étrange étranger, Jean, qui fait irruption comme une bouffée de vie dans leur ferme de montagne assombrie et emmurée par le chagrin et le silence. Nous sommes dans un village tout au bout de la route, que barre la montagne. Corpulence paisible, bonté franche, voix douce, diction un peu hachée, regard clair et verbe assuré, Jean (interprété avec charisme par Eric Challier) secoue la cendre qui étouffait les cœurs et réveille l’envie de parler et d’être au monde. Lui-même a été trompé par la femme de sa vie et il est devenu irrémédiablement absent au monde. « La terre tourne, j’y suis plus, voilà tout. » Rosine, la maîtresse de maison au cœur solide rêve de le faire revenir à la vie. Quel contraste entre un monde montagnard sans équivoque, rythmé par les saisons et le travail, et les méandres des mondes intérieurs des personnages ensemencés de douleur ! La langue de Giono, « à la fois concrète, charnue et lyrique, goûtant à pleine bouche l’humus et l’air vif des montagnes, sans pittoresque aucun », selon les mots de François Rancillac, frappe juste, même lorsque les mots sont à peine chuchotés, ils font pleinement sens, ils habitent l’espace, ils laissent voir les blessures des âmes, les non-dits enfouis, les désirs qui renaissent.
Un fantôme invisible
La grâce affûtée et sensible de la mise en scène sait laisser s’exprimer et respirer ces mots de façon magistrale, avec humour et clarté, et sait aussi mettre en valeur les corps. Ce qui est finalement à l’œuvre et que retranscrit très bien la mise en scène délicate et précise, c’est un âpre combat entre l’envie de vivre, de renaître, et l’envie absolue de renoncement, parce que la douleur de la perte a tout anéanti. Voilà pourquoi au cœur du réel surgit l’étrange, au cœur de la langue surgit un abîme d’indicibles peines. Jean aime un fantôme invisible qui le broie. La très belle scénographie avec ses pans de murs mobiles, ses signes clairs d’ouverture, fermeture, enfermement ou sortie, s’inspire de l’’“outrenoir“ de Pierre Soulages, le sol et les parois sont ainsi couverts d’une texture noire, épaisse et striée, qui capture la lumière. Presque rien de concret donc (mis à part quelques objets), mais plutôt un univers mental magnifiquement exploré. La scénographie, les lumières, le travail des voix, le jeu des comédiens, sans faille, tout concourt à faire de cette mise en scène une pleine réussite.
