En 1209, commençait la croisade contre les Albigeois qui, au prétexte de lutter contre l’hérésie cathare, devint une guerre de la papauté, soutenue par sa fille aînée et ses suppôts du trône de France, contre l’Occitanie en une suite ininterrompue de massacres cruels et de folies assassines. L’occasion était trop belle et les puissants s’en saisirent en profitant de la légitimité religieuse pour réduire à néant ce grand courant libertaire qui refusait le diktat de la langue et des mœurs : les troubadours firent les frais de la volonté hégémonique du goupillon romain. Le Maquis ressuscite la fin’amor, cette éthique raffinée du plaisir, et les sirventès, ces poèmes satiriques visant les grands et le clergé, pour composer un spectacle joyeusement féroce et gaiement irrévérencieux. Les textes contemporains se mêlent aux poèmes du XIIIème siècle, parfois dits dans leur langue d’origine. La composition musicale emprunte aux partitions d’époque que revisitent des musiciens aguerris au jazz et aux musiques actuelles. Tâchant de retrouver « dans une forme contemporaine l’esprit de résistance des jongleurs, trobadors et trobairitz », les joyeux compères du Maquis saluent la mémoire de leurs précurseurs en résistance.
