Un vieux canapé en cuir, une table à repasser, du linge qui traîne partout, des chaises de-ci de-là, un buffet de grand-mère… L’idée est celle d’un intérieur désordonné, l’intérieur d’un de ces appartements trop petits dans lesquels s’entassent des familles trop nombreuses. Ici, vivent en effet, les uns sur les autres, une grand-mère, sa fille, et trois de ses petits-enfants. C’est la famille Coleman, une famille modeste, une famille sans pères. Une famille biscornue, bancale, déstructurée, au sein de laquelle – hormis la figure tutélaire qu’incarne la grand-mère – chacun semble avoir bien du mal à trouver une façon de s’inscrire dans le monde. Ces personnages s’agitent devant nous, à travers les événements de leur quotidien, des plus banals aux plus décalés, tous les dérèglements, les frottements et les échappatoires de leurs existences rouillées. Le cas de la famille Coleman repose ainsi sur de toutes petites choses, de petites touches d’ordinaire qui, enflammées par les discordes et secouées par les déséquilibres, sculptent sans en avoir l’air la matière d’un théâtre vif et singulier.
Un théâtre de l’effleurement et de l’enchevêtrement
Pourtant, les premières impressions qui se dégagent du spectacle de Claudio Tolcachir pourraient faire penser à quelque chose d’une comédie de café-théâtre. Jeu volontariste, esthétique de récupération, quotidienneté des dialogues… Mais, peu à peu, un mouvement prend corps, une forme de densité se déploie. Tout va trop vite, tout passe, revient et s’entremêle comme si rien de ce qui était dit n’avait vraiment vocation à être approfondi. Le Cas de la famille Coleman nourrit en effet un théâtre de l’effleurement et de l’enchevêtrement. Un théâtre concret, polyphonique, qui joue du réalisme sans jamais verser dans l’explicatif ou le cliché, qui éclaire un entrelacs de sujets sans vraiment les traiter – sujets agissant comme autant de substances à diffusion lente. Car, derrière les allures enjouées, facétieuses de son spectacle, Claudio Tolcachir tend les fils du tragique. Il le fait de manière touchante et délicate, en recomposant sur scène des pans entiers de réel, en faisant émerger les ambivalences et les complexités de la vie.
