Laurent Gutmann met en scène Le Cerceau (1985)de Victor Slavkine, un auteur russe de la génération du « dégel ». Le temps des désillusions de la société soviétique entraîne l’invention de refuges personnels. Le Cerceau est l’expression de ce désir, bâtir une communauté au-delà de l’utopie socialiste désenchantée. Après avoir hérité de la maison de sa grand-mère, l’ingénieur Pétouchok (Éric Petitjean) donne rendez-vous à cinq amis dont Vladimir (François Raffenaud), Pacha (Richard Sammut), Lars (Bruno Forget) et Nadia (Jade Collinet) afin d’ouvrir la demeure et y passer le week-end. Le protagoniste rêve de la maison comme le lieu d’une communauté, d’un partage du présent où l’on ne se replierait pas dans sa solitude. Survient Koka (Daniel Laloux), un vieil homme d’un autre temps – Octobre, Stalingrad…-, un amoureux de la disparue. La lecture de la correspondance des amants, découverte par hasard, est l’occasion de faire retour sur le passé – enfance, jeunesse, politique et maturité. Désertée, la maison est un dépôt de souvenirs ; il faut lui redonner vie et âme. Valioucha (Marie-Christine Orry), la femme aimée de jadis, fait partie de la compagnie, un amour dont la survivance ne tient qu’à sa perte : « J’ai compris une chose : il n’y a rien. Rien d’autre que ce qui existait avant », dit l’homme.
Un souffle d’air enivrant
La nostalgie touche tant au passé qu’on a perdu qu’à celui qu’on a rêvé. Le songe intime repose sur la croyance de pouvoir changer de vie en changeant de maison, ce lieu symbolique et matériel de la constitution d’une identité à travers une communauté de goûts, d’idées et de sentiments. La solitude devrait s’évanouir avec la relation à l’autre et la réciprocité. Ces compagnons, grâce au talent des comédiens, véhiculent une qualité d’être qui éveille les sens, un souffle d’air enivrant dans l’espace arbitraire du présent. La virée en bagnole s’arrête brutalement devant la datcha. À coups de hache sur les portes et fenêtres scellées par des planches, les résidents ouvrent le logis, en écho inversé à La Cerisaie de Tchékhov. Paroles échangées d’une époque à l’autre, surgissements de souvenirs, divagations de la pensée, les années et les personnages se confondent au cours d’un dîner poétique aux bougies. Les convives tiennent le fil de leur désir, de leur rêve et de leur discours décousu. La chaleur crépite sous les craquements de l’escalier, et au détour d’une verrière sans vitre, se dessine un joli volume scénique aux lumières magiciennes du théâtre d’ombres. Sous la voûte du temps, le vide en chacun a fini par sculpter une existence palpable, lourde de regrets et d’espérances – la vie qui file en glissant.
