Confusion des sentiments, surprise de l’amour, maladie de l’amour, désir, stratagèmes, dissimulations, désespoir… Le Chandelier (1835) explore tous ces thèmes, un an avant La confession d’un enfant du siècle, rédigée après la rupture brutale avec George Sand. Le jeu de dupes qui réinvente le triangle amoureux s’avère dans cette pièce une entreprise risquée, rappelant entre farce et drame à quel point le sentiment amoureux est une affaire essentielle et délicate dans la vie. En lice, la jeune Jacqueline, son époux le vieux notaire Maître André, son amant Clavaroche, et un “chandelier“, Fortunio, désigné pour attirer les soupçons du mari et lui-même amoureux de Jacqueline. « Tous ses chefs-d’œuvre ne sont pas si vifs, si enjoués, si pleins d’attendrissement et de réserve, de sourires mouillés et de larmes souriantes » commente Théophile Gauthier en 1848. La compagnie du Théâtre du Trèfle dirigée par la metteure en scène Marie-Claude Morland, défendant une recherche artistique exigeante et collective, s’empare de cette “histoire à tiroirs multiples“, de ce “foisonnement d’images et d’émotions“ en laissant s’épanouir le texte sur un plateau quasi nu, pour mettre à jour une subtile palette de relations et sentiments entre hommes et femmes.
