La confusion des sentiments, les caprices, les surprises et les pièges de l’amour, les hésitations, le désespoir et la fougue de la jeunesse dans une société encore figée, autant de thèmes qui structurent Le Chandelier (1835), rédigé un an avant La confession d’un enfant du siècle, faisant suite à la rupture brutale avec George Sand. Le triangle amoureux se complique ici avec l’entrée en jeu d’un troisième homme gravitant autour de la seule femme de la pièce : la jeune et désirable Jacqueline (Marie Plouviez). Après le mari – le vieux notaire Maître André, ridicule et menaçant (Bertrand Farge) -, l’amant – Clavaroche, jeune et fougueux officier (Johannes Hamm) -, voici le chandelier – très jeune Fortunio (Ludovic Perez), fou amoureux de Jacqueline -, installé dans ses fonctions afin de détourner les soupçons du mari vers son innocente personne. Ombre évanescente, mannequin commode, véritable paravent derrière lequel peut s’épanouir le mystère de l’amour, ainsi couvert d’un voile impénétrable… « Tout ce qui ne se sait pas s’ignore ». Le jeu de dupes se révèle une entreprise risquée et inattendue, et la comédie oscille entre farce et drame, jusqu’au dénouement teinté de désenchantement.
Drame des désirs flous
La compagnie du Théâtre du Trèfle ne garde dans son adaptation que les quatre personnages principaux, concentrant ainsi l’action sur les relations complexes qui se trament au sein du quatuor. Les acteurs s’emparent de la pièce à suspens avec fougue et jubilation, sur le plateau quasi nu, jouant des corps autant que des mots, en un ballet franc et direct qui aiguise la farce tout en laissant voir le drame des désirs flous et des tromperies mal assumées. A vrai dire ce sont les silences qui laissent voir le mieux cette confusion, et Fortunio sait ici fort bien jeter le trouble par sa seule présence obstinée et soumise. La jeune héroïne se démène avec énergie, et elle s’en trouve si désorientée, désorientant par ricochet les trois hommes qui l’entourent, que la situation évoque les amoureux déboussolés du Songe shakespearien, confondant rêve et réalité. Le propos d’Alfred de Musset, né voici tout juste deux siècles en 1810, demeure cependant plus terrien, comme si ce désordre amoureux virevoltant et pétri d’ambiguïté laissait poindre des désirs de révolte. Un beau quatuor, désaccordé et peu tempéré…
