Le premier orage a emporté leurs parents adoptifs et a laissé Rock, William, Fred-Gilles et Noéma, seuls dans une misérable cabane avec, comme unique nourrice, le Dire-Dire, sorte d’objet transitionnel et réceptacle à mots. La sœur cadette, qu’un « éclat d’éclair » a révélé au chant, part à la ville cultiver son talent et revient un jour, les yeux vivants dans un corps mort, victime d’un caillot cérébral qui la transforme en poupée de chiffon. Ses frères l’entourent alors de « soins d’amour à domicile » pour la faire renaître au verbe, malgré l’opposition des « municipiens », qui considèrent que les « Durant », qui tirent leur nom de cette crise de « durant l’orage » qui les a soudés, sont des anormaux frustres à l’entendement foudroyé. La langue de Daniel Danis, inventive et riche en néologismes imagés, se plaît aux métaphores et aux crases, aux explosions sémantiques et aux créations drolatiques. Les personnages, sortes de démiurges au matin du monde, semblent découvrir et nommer les choses à leur surgissement : « la parole est action », dit Hélène Arnaud, qui lit ce drame mystérieux et furieusement poétique comme « une certaine manière de se consumer et de renaître de ses cendres ».
