Figure majeure de l’opéra allemand des années 1910 et des débuts de la République de Weimar aux côtés de Richard Strauss, Franz Schreker perd progressivement les faveurs de la critique et du public, avant de voir son sort scellé par le Troisième Reich. Si ses œuvres sont revenues au répertoire des maisons d’Outre-Rhin, il a fallu attendre 2012 pour voir en France une production scénique de son opus le plus célèbre, Le Son lointain. Lyon a fait redécouvrir Les stigmatisés en 2015, et cette année le moins connu Irrelohe, mais c’est à nouveau l’Opéra du Rhin qui propose pour la première fois Le Chercheur de trésors au public français, dans une coproduction avec la Deutsche Oper de Berlin créée en mai dernier et confiée à Christof Loy. À la tête de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg dont il fut le directeur musical de 2012 à 2021, Marko Letonja met en évidence l’opulence d’une partition où l’on attend l’incarnation de la soprano finlandaise Helena Juntunen dans le rôle d’Els, la fille de l’aubergiste qui a volé le bijou de la Reine, totem d’une intrigue baignée de symbolisme.
