Un petit bourg du Hainaut, en Belgique. Cinq jour après la mort accidentelle de son chien, l’ancien médecin de la commune, un octogénaire nommé Samuel Heymann, se donne la mort. Réunie au café Pétrelle, la communauté villageoise s’interroge sur les motivations d’un tel acte. Le docteur Heymann a-t-il pu se suicider par désespoir, ne pouvant supporter l’idée de vivre sans son animal ? Une lettre rédigée durant les cinq jours ayant précédé sa mort va, peu à peu, éclairer le mystère de cette disparition. Ainsi que l’histoire du défunt, un homme à la personnalité secrète.
Le mystère des sentiments inavoués
« La nouvelle d’Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt est construite en deux parties, expliquent Marie-Françoise et Jean-Claude Broche, notre travail de mise en scène, et donc de théâtralisation du texte, a été en premier lieu de les relier dans l’espace scénique et dans le temps. Le dépouillement du décor, la douce présence de la lumière, le jeu sincère et épuré des comédiens, et la qualité du texte permettront au spectateur de se projeter et de créer son propre univers. » Un univers qui joue sur le suspens et les mouvements d’une enquête policière, à partir de laquelle les deux metteur-e-s en scène proposent aux spectateurs de devenir « les réalisateurs de leur propre cinéma intérieur ».
