Loi nouvelle d’un monarque tout-puissant matant les frondes individualistes contre ordre ancien de la vaillance féodale saignant à blanc les forces vives de la nation par l’usage immodéré d’un fer intrépide : on oublie trop souvent que Le Cid est autant une pièce politique qu’une tragédie amoureuse. Alain Ollivier le rappelle et l’illustre par une mise en scène lumineuse qui organise autour de la figure du duel les différentes étapes de cet apprentissage par les héros de la soumission indiscutée au roi. Sur une longue scène de bois semblable à une piste d’escrime, les protagonistes se rencontrent et leurs combats sont systématiquement empêchés. La vieillesse terrasse Don Diègue qui s’écroule sans pouvoir répondre à Don Gomès, celui-ci meurt en coulisse et son sang ne se répand que dans les pleurs de sa fille, Don Sanche ne fait que raconter sa défaite et la magnanimité de son vainqueur en apportant l’épée du Cid à Chimène, les amants eux-mêmes ne parviennent pas à se battre, et tous, jusqu’à l’infante sortant calmer ses assauts passionnés dans le secret de son cabinet, se retrouvent systématiquement désarmés. La seule stabilité véritable est celle que polarise la figure du souverain, en des scènes de groupe à la composition magnifiée par les costumes de Florence Sadaune, dont le raffinement des couleurs et des matières offre, sous les très beaux clairs-obscurs de Marie-Christine Soma, des effets caravagesques éblouissants.
Totalité et harmonie : un spectacle à l’équilibre parfait
Le soin esthétique apporté par l’équipe réunie autour d’Alain Ollivier à ce Cid élégant et racé s’allie à une attention jouissive accordée à la musicalité et à la beauté du vers cornélien. Sans componction ni afféterie, avec une simplicité qui pourtant ne compose jamais avec la facilité, les comédiens disent parfaitement le muet et le sonnant de cette langue rythmée et claire, évitant les pièges de la péroraison dans les tirades qui sont toujours les plus difficiles puisque les plus célèbres, et offrant une fluidité au texte confondante de justesse. Quant aux personnages, Alain Ollivier les dépoussière de leur componction hiératique habituelle : Philippe Girard est un comte plus bonhomme et las que bouillant et susceptible dont le gant rouge abaissant le fer de Rodrigue est bouleversant d’humanité, John Arnold campe un roi de Castille pétillant d’intelligence et de ruse amicale, Claire Sermonne et Thibaut Corrion offrent de très beaux duos amoureux et le reste de la distribution, formidable de justesse, concourt à la réalisation d’un spectacle dont l’unité et l’harmonie portent très haut la gloire de cette pièce immortelle.
