Cette mise en scène de Bernard Bloch a une histoire : c’est à la demande du metteur en scène que l’auteur Alain Foix a écrit ce texte, pour éclairer la question entre les noirs et les juifs. Or la pièce, un dialogue philosophico-poétique à quatre voix, dépasse cette question pour aborder plus largement celle de l’altérité. On pense à Emmanuel Lévinas. « Le statut même de l’humain implique la fraternité et l’idée du genre humain » dit-il dans Totalité et infini. « Autrui est visage » dit-il encore dans Ethique et infini. Des idées fortement présentes dans la pièce, qui prennent sens à travers le jeu des acteurs et la présence des images, des idées rappelant autant l’absolue bêtise du racisme que l’inéluctable dignité de chaque être humain, des idées rappelant que le meurtre de l’autre parce qu’il est autre est une absurde folie. Qui donc peuple la scène ? Des figures littéraires que l’imaginaire collectif connaît bien, nées dans l’imagination de l’immense Shakespeare : Shylock et Othello, et en parallèle, jusqu’à ce que la rencontre et l’apaisement adviennent, deux femmes, Desdémone l’épouse innocente assassinée et Jessica la fille rebelle qui fuit et trahit son père pour l’amour d’un chrétien. Philippe Dormoy, Hassane Kouyaté, Morgane Lombard et Anne Azoulay jouent juste. Sous un ciel vide, spectateurs torturés d’un temps et d’un désert infinis, Othello et Shylock, victimes de la jalousie et du ressentiment, errent depuis quatre siècles, seuls, voués à ressasser leur douleur et leur solitude, au fil d’une immuable détestation.
Les images comme médiation quasi thérapeutique
Côté cour, la scène est délimitée par un grand rideau de gaze gris clair, où seront projetées les images. Les personnages s’assoient parfois autour d’une vaste table vide et nue, comme une trace triste de banquets oubliés. Au début chacun campe sur son chagrin, on craint même qu’une ambiance trop funèbre, éthérée et désolée s’installe. Puis la pièce évolue et orchestre subtilement la confrontation entre Shylock et Othello, mais surtout, et c’est toute la force de ce texte et de cette délicate mise en scène, entre soi et soi. L’arrivée des deux femmes – épouse et fille -, plus libres que les hommes, le surgissement des images meurtrières (l’histoire malheureuse des peuples noirs et juifs) jouent un rôle essentiel de retour au réel. Les images, spectres modernes, réveillent la conscience et aident à la réconciliation. Elles sont une médiation quasi thérapeutique pour se reconnaître et se dire simplement pardon. Pour une réconciliation rêvée par le théâtre, belle, intense et émouvante, où la haine et le ressentiment laissent place à une maturité démocratique.
