Dans une ville arabe que Carole Fréchette ne nomme pas mais qui emprunte ses traits, sa topographie symbolique et ses douleurs à Beyrouth, ville qui a vu naître cette pièce, et à Jérusalem, ville où Nabil El Azan en a répété cette version en compagnie des acteurs du Théâtre National Palestinien, erre Hélène, à la recherche du petit collier de perles blanches qu’elle a perdu. Le parcours initiatique de cette Occidentale dans le dédale d’une ville qui tente de panser les plaies d’un interminable conflit se fait sous la houlette et la protection de Nabil, un chauffeur de taxi grâce auquel elle rencontre un contremaître cynique, une mère meurtrie, un homme au rêve brisé et un petit revendeur à la sauvette. Ces personnages lui révèlent une réalité plus douloureuse que la sienne et la part la plus douloureuse d’elle-même, de ses échecs enfouis et de ses renoncements que la mission que lui confient ceux qu’elle croise lui permet de dépasser : retourner dans son pays pour dire « on ne peut plus vivre comme ça ». Ce spectacle porteur de l’exigence éthique et politique de la paix et de la considération d’autrui est l’occasion de découvrir le talent et l’engagement du Théâtre National Palestinien qui, depuis Jérusalem-Est, résiste depuis vingt ans à la destruction par la création.
