D’une exquise et révolutionnaire expressivité, ces deux madrigaux de Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) sont véritablement magnifiés par Gintaras Varnas, qui utilise ici les capacités d’expression de la marionnette afin de mettre en valeur l’art baroque du compositeur et la théâtralité de l’intrigue, et crée des tableaux visuellement très aboutis, avec des pointes d’humour. Particulièrement émouvant, Le Combat de Tancrède et Clorinde (1638), d’après La Jérusalem délivrée du poète Le Tasse, expose le duel malheureux du preux chevalier chrétien Tancrède, épris de la belle musulmane Clorinde, déguisée en soldat, qu’il transperce de son épée. Le Bal des ingrates (1608), madrigal amoureux, évoque de vieilles femmes condamnées à l’enfer pour avoir refusé l’amour. Vénus et son fils Cupidon demandent à Hadès la permission de faire sortir les dévotes… pour éclairer leur inconduite.
