Marc-Olivier Dupin s’est chargé avec un plaisir non dissimulé d’écrire la partition de ce monstre cinématographique de près de quatre heures. Familier de l’exercice, par son travail sur Nana de Jean Renoir notamment, il s’est imprégné de ce double chef-d’œuvre littéraire et cinématographique, composant au fil du récit, plan par plan, pour donner aux personnages leur couleur orchestrale propre. « La force de l’intrigue, l’intensité des sentiments doivent être accompagnées au premier degré, souligne-t-il. Il me semble nécessaire d’écrire des musiques heureuses pour les moments de bonheur, d’accompagner dans les tréfonds de la tristesse les situations dramatiques ou parfois d’être dans l’ironie d’un personnage ». À la tête de l’Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, dont il vient d’abandonner la direction pour celle de France-Musique, Marc-Olivier Dupin retrouvera, sur l’écran tendu au-dessus de l’orchestre, ce chef-d’œuvre qui est désormais un peu le sien.
