Louis Armstrong, Lester Young Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Pat Metheny, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins… Ce n’est plus un inventaire, c’est un abécédaire du jazz. Dans tous les styles et à toutes les époques, Roy Haynes aura accompagné ceux et celles qui ont écrit certaines des plus belles pages de l’histoire de cette musique. Après plus de soixante ans de carrière dans les bras,Roy Haynes n’a rien perdu de sa légendaire bonhommie. Chapeau de cow-boy vissé sur la tête et sourire scotché au coin des lèvres, il demeure égal à lui-même, surtout pas à rouler des caisses malgré sa largeur d’épaules, encore moins à en faire des tonnes. Non, il est d’une tout autre classe : lui se place toujours juste au service du swing.
A 82 ans bien cognés, le natif du Massachusetts en redemande encore et toujours. Toujours prêt à raconter une anecdote des plus terribles, encore prompt à battre le rappel des esprits d’Afrique, à porter la bonne nouvelle. Ce soir, à ses côtés, un trio de jeunots qui apprennent le métier, qui savent bien la chance qu’ils ont d’accompagner cet éternel sideman. Une leçon d’histoire, façon grande classe, en rien du genre palmes académiques, c’est cela un concert avec ce maître des tambours. Un rendez-vous avec l’histoire, qu’il ne faut manquer sous aucun prétexte.
