Quelle est la palette de votre répertoire ?
Matthieu Boré : Je dirais pour faire simple que je reprends et compose des chansons traditionnelles américaines, donc du jazz, mais aussi du rhythm and blues avec toutes les influences que cela sous-entend. L’Amérique est un vaste creuset.
Un modèle dans cette démarche ?
M. B. : Brian Setzer est, à mon avis, l’un des musiciens actuels qui fait le mieux vivre cette musique des années 30-50, tout en lui donnant un son moderne.
« Je ne suis pas à proprement parler un nostalgique de cette époque car cette musique est en dehors du temps »
D’où vous vient ce goût pour ces vieilles chansons des années 30-50 ?
M. B. : Je suis tombé dedans quand j’étais petit. Mon père écoutait du rock’n’roll, j’étais fan, et puis je suis remonté aux sources, j’ai découvert le rhythm and blues, le jazz, le gospel, la country, le blues, etc. Je ne suis pas à proprement parler un nostalgique de cette époque car cette musique est en dehors du temps. Elle traversera les âges comme celle de Mozart.
Quelle est votre approche de cette musique, votre démarche artistique? On sent chez vous un grand respect pour ces chansons, et en même temps une recherche personnelle qui tend souvent vers l’épure…
M. B. : Quand on aime la chanson, le talent d’écriture des Gershwin, Berlin et consorts vous saisit immédiatement. Les mélodies sont si pures et les textes si précis qu’ils se suffisent quasiment à eux-mêmes. Tout est dans l’interprétation. Moi ce que je recherche c’est l’émotion et l’énergie.
