Jean Genet publie sa première œuvre en 1942, et c’est Le Condamné à mort. Tandis que le poète est incarcéré dans la prison de Fresnes pour vol, il écrit ce long poème où les quatrains en alexandrins déploient une langue crue et mettent en scène à la fois magnifiquement et impudiquement la dernière nuit de Maurice Pilorge, condamné à mort de vingt ans, pour l’assassinat de son amant. Depuis une dizaine d’années, Etienne Daho chante « Sur mon cou », extrait de cette œuvre. La rencontre du musicien et interprète avec la grande actrice qu’est Jeanne Moreau a concrétisé leur envie commune d’enregistrer et d’interpréter sur scène – le plateau nu de la Cour d’honneur – l’intégrale sulfureuse du Condamné à mort, originellement mis en musique par Hélène Martin en 1964. Une musique que réarrange Etienne Daho pour basse, batterie, violoncelle et guitares, pour une ode à l’amour physique et au désir. De quoi faire frémir les ombres des oiseaux nocturnes et leurs cris stridents entre les murs majestueux du Palais des Papes.
