Dans Le Conte d’hiver, tout commence comme une tragédie pour finir dans des accents de comédie. Inspirée d’un roman de Robert Greene (Pandosto : The Triumph of Time), la pièce écrite par Shakespeare en 1610 relate l’histoire de deux rois qui se considèrent comme des frères, jusqu’au jour où l’un des deux est envahi par le poison de la jalousie. Soupçonnant son ami d’entretenir une relation amoureuse avec son épouse, il demande à l’un de ses serviteurs de le tuer… « Cette pièce de Shakespeare est comme tous mes contes préférés, déclare Jean-Sébastien Oudin. C’est la prodigieuse entourloupe d’une histoire d’adulte féroce et sans pitié, qui bascule dans un monde aussi sucré qu’un rêve d’enfant. » Partageant son spectacle en deux parties, le metteur en scène traite tout d’abord les personnages du Conte d’hiver de manière réaliste, puis à la façon d’êtres fantasmatiques. Cela avec, en toile de fond, l’univers de la mafia sicilienne…
