Le mérite affiché de la mise en scène de Gérard Gelas est de dépasser et complexifier l’image du Che, qui fait partie de l’imaginaire collectif banal, pour au contraire s’attacher à rendre palpable et vivante une réflexion sur la marche de l’Histoire, la Révolution et l’implacable nécessité – ou non… – de la violence et du sacrifice d’innocents lorsque s’impose la volonté de transformer la société. Cette pensée se fait entendre au cours d’un interrogatoire réalisé par un journaliste d’aujourd’hui, universitaire et historien, Andrès Cabreira, qui réprouve les morts inutiles autant que le cliché du héros romantique, et rend visite au Che dans cette petite école de Bolivie afin de comprendre davantage le combat et le personnage emblématiques. Le Che a été capturé voici peu de temps, nous sommes le 8 octobre 1967, et « El Commandante » vit sa dernière nuit, quelques heures avant son exécution. L’entretien musclé et sans détours entre les deux hommes entraîne une quête de justifications et de vérités moins nettes qu’on le croit, et la solennité de l’instant évite la langue de bois et met en lumière ce dont la raison humaine est capable : les certitudes comme les doutes.
Hors du temps
L’enseignant de philosophie et écrivain José Pablo Feinmann, né à Buenos-Aires en 1943, a su ici construire un dialogue vif, nerveux, précis, dans un moment suspendu comme hors du temps. La confrontation entre Olivier Sitruk (le Che) et Jacques Frantz (le journaliste) est totalement convaincante, surtout dans les instants où elle est le plus retenue, le plus centrée sur l’intériorité des personnages, évitant ainsi toute tentation illustrative. Jacques Frantz campe aussi avec une juste conviction un journaliste du New York Times, et Fidel Castro. Les autres personnages, oniriques ou réalistes, sont moins marquants. La mise en scène, sobre, efficace et de facture classique, vaut surtout par la direction d’acteurs, par la qualité de la joute oratoire, qui pointe des questions d’une éternelle actualité sur l’émergence de la haine et le surgissement de la violence. Progrès historique : la lutte révolutionnaire a cédé la place à de lâches, délirants et immondes attentats. Une pièce créée lors d’Avignon Off 2010.
