Injustement confidentiel en France, le grand écrivain portugais António Lobo Antunes est régulièrement pressenti pour le Prix Nobel de littérature. Son œuvre vaste et labyrinthique, d’une densité monumentale, porteuse de monologues intimes d’une beauté étrangement matérielle, d’un style exaltant, lyrique et tenu à la fois, son œuvre, fourmillant de phrases qui ne veulent pas finir, révèle la hauteur de vue d’un regard sans concession sur le Portugal, sur le monde, sur l’humain. Dans Le Cul de Judas, un homme revient sur sa participation, durant vingt-sept mois, au bourbier angolais. Un homme qui, comme António Lobo Antunes, a été profondément marqué par « l’esclavage sanglant » de cette guerre coloniale ayant mis fin, « dans une Afrique miraculeuse et ardente », à la domination portugaise sur l’Angola. A travers un monologue exigeant — purgé de surcharges illustratives, de débordements anecdotiques —, François Duval parvient à faire renaître la grandeur de cette formidable écriture : par le biais d’une incarnation centrée sur le dire et le ressentir. Une incarnation s’appuyant sur un enchaînement de ruptures, de silences, de fougue, de contrastes.
De l’art d’incarner la littérature
Une incarnation qui réussit le tour de force de donner à entendre et à appréhender tout le foisonnement, tout le poids de la langue d’António Lobo Antunes. Car cette adaptation du Cul de Judas ne donne pas à choisir entre théâtre et littérature, entre exigence du plateau et respect de la matière stylistique. Soulignant la longueur et l’éclat des phrases, pointant les virgules, ciselant les angles et les incises, François Duval se laisse traverser par la puissante singularité d’une plume tout en éclairant la profondeur d’un propos, en investissant l’acuité d’émotions issues de confidences souvent poignantes. Très vite, un lien d’empathie et de proximité se crée, unissant les spectateurs au narrateur. Un lien qui se construit à partir de la parole, mais aussi de certains silences, certaines lenteurs, de certains regards prolongés. « Il y a des moments et des situations où on communique mieux avec le regard qu’avec les mots ; ça aussi, c’est de l’intimité », confie António Lobo Antunes, dans un livre d’entretiens accordés à María Luisa Blanco1. Ces moments et ces situations, François Duval les aborde pleinement, conférant à son spectacle une forme d’amplitude, de juste intensité.
