Steeve Jefferson, membre des troupes d’élite, a déserté la base où il était affecté, car il vient de refuser l’exécution d’une mission spéciale. L’Etat envoie huit hommes à ses trousses : sept tombent sous ses coups. Seul reste Yorki, que Steeve piège et condamne à forer une galerie qui doit conduire à la Cité des fous. Vingt années durant, Steeve force son ancien compagnon d’armes à creuser sans relâche, un trou dont il ignore s’il sera sa tombe ou le moyen de sa libération. Pendant ce temps, de cigarette en cigarette, Steeve et la putain jouent aux échecs dans une ambiance délétère, sans vraiment savoir s’ils sont des pions soumis aux stratégies du hasard ou s’ils sont maîtres de leur destin. Patrick Schmitt met en scène la pièce sombre et violente qu’il a écrite où les personnages font l’épreuve d’un voyage à l’intérieur de soi dont l’issue hésite entre la mort et la folie. Souci métaphysique, quête identitaire et absurdité de l’existence forment les thèmes de cette symphonie pour cadavres et militaires.
