Utzbach, Autriche profonde. L’auberge du Cerf noir, avec sa salle de bal encombrée d’ordures moisies et poussiéreuses. Les porcheries alentour déversent une odeur insoutenable. C’est là, dans cet environnement sublime qui exprime tout l’amour que l’auteur voue à sa remarquable patrie, que débarque avec femme et enfants le littérateur, philosophe et comédien d’Etat Bruscon, afin de représenter le soir même l’œuvre d’une vie, La Roue de l’Histoire. Le temps est lourd, et Bruscon a fort à faire afin d’aménager le lieu… à défaut de pouvoir aménager la capacité réceptive des spectateurs du cru. La dénégation de l’art théâtral est un thème majeur de cette œuvre ironique et mordante, carnavalesque et morbide, où le metteur en scène Patrick Schmitt revendique d’être irrespectueux face au texte et à ses didascalies. Lorsque Bruscon, double grimaçant de l’auteur, harangue ses interlocuteurs, c’est Bernhard lui-même qui parle, et le metteur en scène affirme : « Sur le théâtre, il faut prolonger cette insolence, casser les règles ! » Il nous invite à cette “pantomime existentielle“ grotesque et bouffonne, mais aussi terriblement désenchantée et grave. La chute du texte est d’ailleurs aussi effarante que comique. Comme une volonté irréductible de balayer toute banalité, de brandir une lucidité amère et blessante. Si Thomas Bernhard est autant joué en ce moment, ce n’est sans doute pas un hasard.
