Formidable alliage de grotesque et de sublime, grandiose représentation qui moque infiniment la représentation théâtrale et dénie le théâtre, Le Faiseur de théâtre de Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) compte parmi ses œuvres les plus grinçantes, féroces et iconoclastes. D’autant plus que cette interrogation ironique et drolatique de l’art va bien sûr de pair avec une dénonciation furieuse de la société autrichienne, abhorrée par l’auteur. Rappelons que l’écrivain a interdit par clause testamentaire la représentation de son théâtre en Autriche jusqu’en 2059. La mise en scène de Patrick Schmitt, que l’on espère voir en tournée dans de nombreux lieux tant elle est remarquablement aboutie, réussit justement à donner corps à cette dimension sublime et grotesque, comique et percutante, sans verser dans l’outrance ou l’extravagance, célébrant le théâtre ici nié (savoureux paradoxe) grâce à un judicieux souci du détail, à des personnages secondaires particulièrement bien stylisés et incarnés, et à une époustouflante performance de l’acteur principal Jean-Luc Debattice, qui a la parole quasiment du début à la fin de la pièce. Quel acteur, quelle voix et quelle langue, instrument d’une colère et d’une détestation, de ressassements et de dénonciations, déversant sans frein les tumultes de la pensée tel un fleuve ou un souffle fulminant et pourtant dérisoire.
“Perversité“ millénaire du théâtre
Bruscon, dramaturge et comédien d’Etat, “faiseur de théâtre“ depuis le plus jeune âge, auteur d’une pièce sublime qu’il va donner ce soir au Cerf Noir, La Roue de l’histoire, débarque avec femme et enfants à Utzbach. 280 habitants, cloaque abominable, néant culturel et anéantissement où cohabitent « des centres à engraisser les cochons, des églises et des nazis », pour reprendre la terminologie de Bruscon. Au cœur de ce trou atroce, de cette auberge minable et poussiéreuse de bric et de broc, Bruscon, tyrannique et mégalomaniaque, se démène. « Shakespeare, Voltaire et moi. » Il déplore l’anti-talent de son épouse et de sa fille autant que la stupidité de son fils. Il réprouve la “perversité“ millénaire du théâtre, absurde et mensonger. Il a des exigences, dont certaines inavouables. Il demande au capitaine des pompiers l’autorisation de couper l’éclairage de secours à la fin de la pièce (tout comme Thomas Bernhard l’avait demandé à Hambourg en 1975 pour L’Ignorant et le fou). La scène est un monde, et la scène est un enfermement, où l’extinction et les ténèbres sont le mot de la fin… A Utzbach la représentation n’aura pas lieu, mais à La Forge de Nanterre, le public (qui a beaucoup ri !) a assisté à une représentation de haute tenue. Remarquable pantomime théâtrale et existentielle bavarde à écouter autant qu’à voir !
