Mercadet, spéculateur plus sympathique que son contemporain Saccard, autour duquel Zola construit L’Argent, mais tout aussi cynique, est un faiseur. Habile escroc sans scrupules, canaille sans autre loi que celle de la chrématistique, il multiplie, en vain, les tentatives pour s’enrichir. Dans cette pièce créée un an après la mort de Balzac, son auteur fustige les travers du capitalisme financier, aux mains des haussiers et des baissiers, où délits d’initiés, fausses promesses et manipulation font la fortune des uns et la ruine des autres. Pour tâcher de rassurer ses créanciers et échapper à la misère et à l’opprobre, Mercadet invente des expédients rocambolesques qui se retournent contre lui, car au jeu de dupes, malheureux est souvent celui qui se croit plus malin que les autres. En choisissant de mettre en scène ce « vaudeville vénéneux et instable », au rythme effréné, Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota retrouve ses thèmes de prédilection (« un tissu familial et social régi par le mensonge, une écrasante figure paternelle, une enfance qui s’éloigne, un adulte en devenir, la naissance de l’amour »), ainsi que sa famille d’élection, la troupe du Théâtre de la Ville.
