C’était un artiste aux multiples facettes. Né en Roumanie en 1898, naturalisé français en 1938, mort à Auschwitz en 1944, Benjamin Fondane est l’auteur d’une œuvre dans laquelle s’expriment à la fois « la révolte, le goût de vivre et le sens de la mort », comme l’a remarqué Henri Meschonnic. Souhaitant « élargir le petit cercle des amis » de l’écrivain, le metteur en scène et comédien Jacques Kraemer a réuni certains de ses textes et poèmes. C’est lui-même qui les dit, sur la scène du Théâtre de la Vieille Ville, dans une représentation pensée comme un « essai théâtral sur une œuvre-vie ». « Je vais m’efforcer de faire aimer [ces œuvres] comme je les aime, confie le fondateur du Théâtre Populaire de Lorraine, avec tout le respect que l’on doit à l’écrivain, l’un des plus importants du XXème siècle, et à l’homme, Benjamin Fondane, pour la grandeur d’une destinée tragique assumée. » Une façon de mettre en lumière les écrits et l’existence d’un auteur injustement méconnu.
