L’un, Abdallah, fait l’acrobate au cirque quand l’autre, l’amant, est Genet, le romancier et dramaturge rebelle. Tous deux, quoique dans des disciplines différentes, côtoient les limites symboliques de la mort puisqu’ils se laissent attirer par l’obscurité du hasard, ses calculs improbables et ses risques encourus. Un jeu où l’on ne rit pas. En 60, Abdallah chute physiquement de son fil sur lequel il ne remontera plus. Le Funambule fraie avec la prophétie macabre quand on sait le destin tragique du héros éponyme : le cirque « est avec la poésie, la guerre, la corrida, l’un des seuls jeux cruels qui subsistent ». Qu’on soit écrivain – auteur d’un fil d’écriture qui exige versement de larmes et de soi au détriment du moindre repos – ou bien athlète de chair et d’os voltigeant sur la corde raide, la création advient le temps d’un éclair puis se nie aussitôt. La source artistique appelle l’épreuve de la mort, le mépris du monde quotidien comme l’oubli de toute satisfaction. À l’inverse, renaît sans cesse un éloge à la fois festif et solitaire à la vie à travers la belle maîtrise des sauts et des bonds du funambule, un homme blessé en son intime dont la prestation est le coup de poignard donné au public. C’est l’échange de quelques secondes de talent, de fascination et d’éblouissement au moment où l’artiste épouse sur la corde son image rêvée.
En pyjama de dormeur ou bien en maillot de cirque clinquant
L’acteur Pierre Constant porte ce Funambule depuis longtemps dans ses bagages. Voilà vingt ans au TNS à Strasbourg, il avançait et reculait, dansait et se pavanait sur la corde raide en faisant sien le discours théorique de Genet. Aujourd’hui, Constant abandonne la corde ; il la reprend en la donnant à imaginer au spectateur par le truchement du rouge et or d’une longue cape échouée sur le sol, une voile pourpre enluminée de dorures théâtrales, tel un corps étendu – celui du funambule ou bien celui de l’écrivain, abandonné à une disparition solitaire. En pyjama de dormeur ou bien en maillot de cirque clinquant, chaste et provocant, le comédien égrène dans un engagement sincère les conseils d’un homme de lettres à un jeune disciple de cirque. À côté de l’évocation des blessures et du malheur passé de qui ose créer, de sa familiarité naturelle avec la mort, le comédien salue de son corps habile la force, l’audace, l’adresse et la haute technicité nécessaires à l’art. À travers le jeu insistant de Constant, on ne pénètre pas dans ce « château de l’âme », la solitude vouée au silence du créateur, qui ne peut se dire sur nulle scène.
