Avec la nouvelle de Kafka, Rapport pour une Académie, l’histoire étrange de la mutation d’un singe en homme relève de la science-fiction la plus rageuse. Un gorille, capturé dans la forêt africaine, est embarqué dans une caisse à bord d’un navire pour Hambourg, afin d’y être exposé zoologiquement. Ne supportant pas cet encagement forcé, la victime – proie des hommes – décide de se faire homme à son tour, une issue capable de mettre fin à cette image dégradée de soi, quand bien même on ne reste qu’un animal. Peu à peu, se soumettant à l’apprentissage douloureux de la domestication, la bête acquiert la parole et s’exhibe dans des spectacles de music-hall qui amusent le public, avide de créatures fantastiques et de phénomènes spectaculaires hors normes, un rappel du saltimbanque hugolien de L’Homme qui rit. Les progrès du mutant sont tels qu’il devient un industriel puissant en reproduisant sur les autres, les rapports d’humiliation personnellement subis. Or, cette satisfaction est ressentie comme vaine, et le gorille désire faire retour à sa condition originelle « existentielle ». Le spectacle raconte ce retour à soi authentique, un acte autobiographique jeté à la face des hommes de sciences trop facilement subjugués par la métamorphose. Pour le gorille, se pose la question de l’humanité.
Une forme inversée de l’être humain
L’homme est respecté ou bien exclu, selon les degrés de l’échelle sociale. Un fait inadmissible de toute époque ; chacun donne une image de soi plus ou moins libre, le plus souvent hypocrite et mensongère. Alejandro Jodorowsky a adapté la nouvelle que son fils, Brontis, interprète en imitant le gorille, une « incarnation » d’autant plus fascinante que la figure animale semble comme humanisée et personnifiée. Brontis Jodorowsky joue la conscience de soi du gorille, une image humaine tout juste déformée, une forme inversée de l’être humain, proche de l’homme sauvage, ce à quoi sont réduits les êtres les plus fragilisés par la vie. Ce King-Kong du cinéma de Schoedsack et Cooper (1933) s’est assagi et sa lubricité légendaire se contente d’une guenon restée à la maison, effarouchée par les hommes qu’elle redoute. L’acteur joue sur l’extraordinaire fascination que suscite le prodige mi-homme mi-animal, entre l’identification et le rejet. Non seulement, l’acteur domine sa parole policée, mais il adapte physiquement son corps aux dimensions de la bête. L’interprète a la vivacité, l’agilité et l’adresse des singes, la même conformation ré-ajustée de leurs extrémités. Le regard égaré par la mélancolie, l’artiste, carré des épaules, semble avoir des bras aussi longs que les jambes. Gare au gorille…
