C’est un monde dévasté par la seconde guerre mondiale, la cruauté et les privations, que le célèbre roman, premier volet de La trilogie des jumeaux de l’auteur d’origine hongroise Agota Kristof, décrit dans un style particulièrement épuré et tranchant, à travers le regard de deux enfants, deux jumeaux mettant en place de terrifiantes stratégies de survie et de résistance dans un monde terrifiant, où l’amour n’est même plus un souvenir. Leur mère les a envoyés chez leur grand-mère, une femme très dure, ne leur offrant aucune consolation. Ils décrivent leur vie dans un grand cahier, où l’analyse redoutablement précise, dénuée de tout ornement, rend compte de la monstruosité d’un pays et d’une humanité en guerre. Paula Giusti crée un univers feutré, inquiétant et ambigu, sans tapage ni cri, où la stylisation évite toute incarnation naturaliste. Cette stylisation très précisément jouée par les comédiens permet à la fois la distanciation et le dévoilement, et là réside l’une des plus belles qualités de la pièce.
De singuliers raccourcis
Tous les éléments du théâtre se combinent pour faire sens, à travers de singuliers raccourcis et des portraits percutants bien que répétitifs. Les enfants, pantins contraints par la folie du monde au pragmatisme le plus sec, marionnettes manipulées par un narrateur présent sur le plateau, parlant en leur nom, luttent contre la douleur en rendant leur corps et leur esprit moins sensibles. La pièce enchaîne de courtes séquences dont le titre apparaît sur un panneau blanc comme la page d’un livre : Exercice d’endurcissement du corps, Le chantage, Le troupeau humain – un tableau particulièrement réussi -, L’incendie… Au fil des scènes, les personnages changent de rôles, et la metteur en scène a choisi de dédoubler quasiment chacun d’entre eux – grand-mère, curé, ordonnance… -, en un duo clownesque, surplus d’étrangeté interrogeant l’identité plurielle, et ce fait si inquiétant qu’un être ordinaire peut devenir bourreau.
