Figure emblématique de la nouvelle scène japonaise, Yôji Sakate construit une œuvre théâtrale visant à explorer, par le biais d’un humour corrosif, des thématiques graves, sensibles, taboues, thématiques qui bousculent les esprits conservateurs du Japon d’aujourd’hui : l’homosexualité féminine à Tokyo, les forces d’autodéfense nippones… Dans Le Grenier, l’auteur et metteur en scène, par le biais de 24 saynètes, porte son regard sur le phénomène des hikikomori, jeunes gens qui décident subitement de vivre cloîtrés dans leur chambre, décidant de cesser toute communication avec leur entourage. Yôji Sakate éclaire ce phénomène psychosocial à travers l’enquête d’un homme dont le frère a mis fin à ses jours dans un « grenier », réduit qu’une entreprise vend en kit sur Internet aux individus qui souhaitent ainsi s’isoler du monde. Entre sens du comique et du tragique, Le Grenier propose « un voyage au cœur du Japon d’aujourd’hui » et pose « la question fondamentale de la liberté de l’être ».
