Le narrateur de la nouvelle de Maupassant si souvent lue par les collégiens, sous l’emprise terrifiante d’un être invisible, rapporte son trouble et ses angoisses. En cela, le thème du double structure le texte, et ici la dualité entre metteur en scène et acteur en constitue un écho pénétrant. « Je vois en ce narrateur l’homme de notre société en proie à un trouble identitaire, en proie à la peur de l’autre, de lui-même et de son devenir » confie Jérémie Le Louët, qui évite tout réalisme pour au contraire faire résonner sur une scène inquiétante et étrange, habitée de lumières savantes, les obsessions et les fièvres du protagoniste, pour rendre compte à travers un jeu du corps et du dire travaillé en profondeur toute la puissance de cette prose si finement ciselée. « J’ai souhaité donner à voir et à entendre une partition baroque et contrastée : du chuchotement à l’incantation, de l’affolement boulimique de la parole à l’aphasie du dire ». Une réussite qui transforme le langage en matière étonnamment vivante.
