« Il va donc falloir que je me tue, moi !… » Jérémie Le Louët ne joue pas du suspense dans son adaptation de la nouvelle de Maupassant : le coup de feu initial installe d’emblée le spectateur dans l’impression de désolation qui naît toujours face à la douleur d’un esprit qui se perd. L’issue fatale ainsi dévoilée, reste à comprendre comme les choses arrivent et comment la folie s’installe. Jérémie Le Louët peut alors aménager à loisir les conditions de la descente progressive dans l’enfer schizophrénique de cet homme, dont la maison est envahie et l’esprit phagocyté par un démon amateur de lait, qui vide ses carafes nocturnes et dévore sa raison. De la « journée admirable » de mai, où le héros, allongé sur l’herbe devant la Seine, voit passer « un superbe trois-mâts brésilien », jusqu’à la conviction finale que ce bateau a amené jusqu’à lui les miasmes de la folie meurtrière qui le submerge et le force à transformer son logis en brasier, Jérémie Le Louët passe par toutes les stations d’un douloureux chemin de croix.
Remarquable équilibre des effets théâtraux
Le comédien, seul en scène, use de tous les artifices du jeu : son visage et son corps signifient le malaise naissant, l’angoisse tenaillante, les périodes de rémission momentanées, l’exaltation d’un combat insensé où les nouvelles ruses inventées pour éviter d’abord, puis découvrir, confondre, piéger le Horla, transforment leur auteur en monstre grimaçant, en loque énervée par le bromure, en pantin virevoltant ou en hystérique semblable aux folles de Charcot. Les lumières de Jean-Luc Chanonat jouent de tous les éclairages possibles, et sur le plateau nu, uniquement meublé de quelques accessoires adroitement suggestifs, naissent des scènes hallucinées et terrifiantes. L’environnement sonore, créé par Simon Denis, fait résonner les échos de la folie dans cette espace mental dévasté, et contribue, par une remarquable maîtrise des effets techniques, à soutenir l’interprétation du comédien. L’ensemble sert de manière époustouflante le texte de Maupassant, jamais assourdi par la sophistication du dispositif scénique, et ainsi, aussi bien offert à la vue que rendu à l’écoute.
